Psoriasis

Psoriasis is not just dry skin. A lot of people make that mistake. They try a moisturiser, it doesn’t work, and they wonder why. The truth is, psoriasis is a condition that starts from inside the body – not on the surface.

It happens when the immune system sends wrong signals and skin cells grow way too fast. Normal skin cells take about a month to grow and shed. With psoriasis, that same process happens in just 3 to 4 days. The cells pile up on the surface and form thick, scaly patches that can be red, silvery, or darkened depending on your skin tone.

Where does it usually appear?

Most commonly on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. But it can show up anywhere – including the face, nails, and even between skin folds. For some people it’s a small patch. For others it covers larger areas of the body.

What triggers?

Climate plays a big role. The heat, humidity, and sudden seasonal changes that are common across India can make flare-ups worse. Other common triggers include stress, infections like throat infections, certain foods, alcohol, and sometimes even some medicines.

Stress is a really big one. Many people notice that their skin gets worse during exams, family pressure, or work deadlines. That connection between mind and skin is very real with psoriasis.

Is it contagious?

No. Completely not. You cannot get psoriasis by touching someone who has it. This is still a big misconception in many parts of India and it causes unnecessary social discomfort for people living with this condition.

Can it be cured?

Honestly, there’s no permanent cure yet. But it can absolutely be managed well. Many people go months or even years without a flare-up when they take care of their triggers, follow a treatment plan, and keep stress in check.

Treatments include medicated creams, light therapy, and in more serious cases, oral medicines or injections. A skin specialist can guide you based on how mild or severe your condition is.

One last thing

Living with psoriasis can feel frustrating. But you’re not alone – millions of people in India deal with it every day. Understanding your triggers and working with a good doctor makes a huge difference.

It’s manageable. Really.
